distance learning share 4-7-20 and 4-8-20

Community Connections

Many of you have shared different ways of moving or brain boost activities. Sebby shared that he would be riding his bike for his brain boost and that he does Jiu-Jitsu at home- with his partner the shark, of course.

We are learning so many fun facts about our community members while being apart.

Did you know that Solveig rides, too?
You can watch the video of her in our communication for Thursday :)

Brennan connects to our love for cats from our Writing Share on Monday using zoom!

Literacy

Fundations

Searching for digraphs at home...

Brennan found a ladybug's shadow and a tiny shell.

Owen and Solveig share their use of letter sounds on a digraph walk at home. They had to listen for the digraph and took on the challenge of recording their findings!

Owen used pictures and sounds to record his findings. Notice the word chop and a picture of somebody chopping! He should feel proud of his use of sound power and picture power to record the digraphs he found.

Below is a powerful example of how we s-t-r-e-t-ch words and listen for the sounds we hear. In Kindergarten we explore language and sounds.

Notice words like shower. Solveig heard the sounds sh-a-w-r.
We can use this as an example for when we are stretching words to add to our writing.

Reading

Listen to Caleb retell one of his books in our plans for Thursday!
We will continue our comprehension work this week and into next week.

Brennan snuggles up and reads at home.

Bryan reads a beautiful book by one of my favorite authors, Oliver Jeffers.

Writing

The children are starting new All About books.
They have been given a partner and are writing an All About My Friend book.
This is a way we can connect our informational writing and our love for our community.
We are working on staying connected, what a great way for us to learn more about our friends and practice our informational writing skills.

Next week, children will be asking and answering questions with their partners in small zoom meetings, gathering information to use in their writing. This connects to additional literacy essentials in speaking and listening as well as language development.

With the help of his dad, Sebby was persistent today. It was hard to draw a picture of Bryan, using the details he noticed. He didn't give up and look at his proud smile. When I get stuck doing my work at home, I'm going to look at this picture and remember how Sebby was persistent with a little help from his dad. If you need a little help when you get stuck, let me know. We can learn from our friends.

Math

Sebby shares his math collection and scientific labels for his collection from last week.
Notice his use of descriptive words, like bumpy.

He also created sock math. You can read his equations and number combinations in the picture. Socks are a great manipulative for showing equations. Socks come in pairs, you can even write a story problem for the socks you have or the socks you are missing. We can use this idea for sock math in our distance learning!

Watching our math video on Wednesday and building number combinations.

Science
Living and Nonliving Things

Owen the scientist records his findings!

Bryan shares his example of a living thing in his yard. A bird. Notice the labels he used, like a scientist. Do you have birds in your yard?
