the art of listening

Last Friday we connected our conversations about stories to our work in our Nature Journals. We read the book Listen and thought about the stories we might hear amongst the trees. The crunch of icy leaves under our feet or the soft steps of a fox. Who has walked here? Where is the fox going? The woods and fields are full of stories.

Listen to the sound of your feet -
the sound of all of us,
and the sound of me

This week we will continue to make thoughtful connections; in writing workshop we are practicing the art of telling stories and through our nature journals and outdoor classroom we are practicing the art of listening to the stories around us.

What will we hear in the woods?

As part of our work as developing storytellers we listened to small moments written by the first graders. We listened to their stories and studied their work.

What did we learn about telling and writing stories from the first grade authors?

We learned about having lots of detail, like characters and feelings.
We learned about careful work and coloring inside the illustrations.
We learned about having lots and lots of words!
